So here’s a thought… Josh Smith for MVP!
How does that sound to NBA and Atlanta Hawks fans? Why are you laughing?
Realistically there are only a couple of players stuffing the stat sheet on a daily basis the way J. Smoove has this season. Plus the fact that in a shortened 66 game season that has included more back to back games than the usual 82 games schedule Josh hasn’t missed one of them and to be honest with all of the injuries that the Hawks have had to endure this season their one shining star has been Josh Smith.
The thought of Smoove for MVP never really crossed my mind until the other half of Sports Kings Radio; Big Mike brought it to my attention.
LeBron, Durant, and Kobe are the favorites to win the MVP honor but based on the qualifications of importance to team and also overall statistics Josh has got to be in that conversation.
- LeBron is playing at a very high level but truthfully they have Bosh & Wade so even without LBJ the Heat would still have to be considered one of the East’s best. In 52 games James is averaging 26.9 points, 8 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2 steals.
- KD is very important to the Thunder and he’s possibly playing the best basketball in the entire league. In 54 games Durant is averaging 27.6 points, 8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1 steal.
- Kobe is also the main cog in the Lakers lineup, despite what many are saying Kobe appears to still have maybe 2-3 good years left in his career. The Black Mamba remains the most important player every time the Lakers touch the court. He’s currently averaging 28 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 55 games.
There is no way to diminish what these guys are doing on a nightly basis but it’s mind boggling how no one is really checking for Atlanta’s native son Josh Smith.
Could it be bad media perception that prevents Josh from being considered one of the NBA’s elite? The Hawks also have the highly paid 6 time all-star Joe Johnson however in the Hawks biggest moments this season it’s been Josh not Joe that has come up HUGE for Atlanta.
- On the season Josh is averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2 blocks in 55 games played.
The only statistical category that Smith lacks in comparison to the other mentioned players is in points per game however, his defensive presence in my opinion makes up for the nearly 10 points that the other players average.
So what do you think Hawks’ fans? Would you sign a petition to help Smoove get a least an honorable mention?
